THE ENDOWMENT ESTABLISHES $2 MILLION EMERGENCY RECOVERY GRANT RESERVE FOR 2026

Wilmington, N.C. Advancing its commitment to strengthening community resilience and safety, The Endowment has established a $2 million Emergency Recovery Grant Reserve designed to deliver fast, targeted support when disaster occurs. This new initiative sets aside funding in 2026 to ensure swift, flexible assistance for New Hanover County residents in the wake of major disruptions or crises.

“We take seriously the role of The Endowment as a civic leader and steward of public resources and are here to stand with New Hanover County residents in times of crisis,” said Interim President and CEO Sophie Dagenais. “This anticipatory lane of funding allows us to prepare so that when challenges arise, we can respond quickly, support our community, and help everyone recover stronger together.”

Over the past two decades, New Hanover County has experienced 20 federally declared disasters, most of them weather-related. History emphasizes the need for dedicated resources that enable immediate, coordinated support when a hurricane, flood, or other catastrophic event impacts residents.

The Emergency Recovery Grant Reserve may be activated when a state of emergency is declared in New Hanover County, providing support to residents facing direct losses—such as housing damage, disrupted transportation or employment, or loss of essential property—and assisting first responders and critical services with unmet needs. Designed to complement existing emergency response systems, the Reserve may also be deployed during non-natural crises, including criminal incidents, victimization, or behavioral health emergencies.

This program is designed to work in collaboration with local emergency management leaders and disaster-response partners and be complementary to the New Hanover County and City of Wilmington’s All Hazards Response Plans.

“Setting aside emergency funds ensures we can be a steady, reliable support for our community when unexpected challenges arise,” said Mary Vail Ware, Director of Community Safety. “This initiative directly supports our mission to strengthen community safety and ensures that when crises hit, recovery can begin immediately, and in partnership with the community.”
