Spreading Hope, Healing, and Heart: New Hanover Outreach Clinic Set to Reopen

Thursday, April 24th, our team had the privilege of attending the open house for the New Hanover Outreach Clinic, formerly known as St. Mary Health Center, and what we witnessed was nothing short of inspiring.

The New Hanover Outreach Clinic provides medical and emergency dental services to individuals and families whose incomes fall below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines. The work being done keeps people out of the emergency room and gives them access to quality care, thanks to a compassionate team of volunteer physicians and community members.

Last year, the clinic faced a setback after being evicted from its long-time home. But thanks to a $695,000 grant from the Endowment, the clinic was able to purchase a new building and start a new chapter in its mission to serve the community. Under the leadership of Executive Director Laura Vinson and her team, the newly purchased building has been completely transformed. They’ve knocked down walls, installed new flooring, painted, moved equipment, and poured heart into every corner of the building in preparation for opening its doors next week.

What stood out most during the open house was that the clinic’s impact extends far beyond medical and dental patient care. Physicians who’ve volunteered for over a decade were visibly moved and excited as they toured the new space. They now have the tools and room they need to serve even more patients, and their excitement to return next week was contagious. A few doctors were even debating over who would be the first to volunteer in the new space.

The clinic brings together so many members of the community. Students from the UNCW Public Health Program intern at the clinic, gaining real-world experience while giving back. Local small businesses donated signage and equipment, and even gave of their time to help Laura and the team move in. Volunteers from all walks of life came together to clean, paint, caulk, and lend a hand. What emerged is more than a clinic—it’s a symbol of hope.

As the clinic reopens next week, it will do so with renewed spirit. More patients will be seen. More lives will be touched. And more stories of healing and humanity will unfold.

Let this be a reminder: the work we do, the partnerships we build, and the investments we make in people and place do matter. They spread hope to patients, providers, and the entire community of people in New Hanover County.

Thank you to all who have worked on this project. And thank you to all who continue to work on projects that truly make a difference in our community.
