The funding from the Endowment grant will help this local project to match or exceed similar projects in the other North Carolina cities such as Raleigh or Charlotte having a much larger Indian community. This will be a significant step forward in promoting local artists and culture in the greater Wilmington area.
CAPE FEAR CULTURAL ASSOCIATION OF INDIA
The vision for India Day 2025 is to immerse the audience and participants in an authentic Indian experience, blending the vibrant essence of Indian culture, traditional attire, diverse cuisine, and rich ethnic heritage. This celebration aspires to transport attendees to the heart of India while showcasing the unique spirit of the world’s largest democracy.
Our first India Day event was held in September 2023 at the UNCW Warwick center. The goal was to preserve and promote multi-cultural aspects of ancient and present India and to foster cultural exchange between people of India and Southeastern North Carolina.
The event was attended by an estimated more than 1500 people of diverse age, background and ethnicity from the greater Wilmington area communities.
The event showcased a diverse range of artists at various stages of development, celebrating the rich traditions of Indian dance and music. Amateur artists from the Indian community in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender Counties brought vibrant performances to life, with some seasoned participants returning from previous events. Dedicated volunteers from the local community contributed countless hours to planning and preparation, both leading up to and during the event. Their efforts were entirely voluntary, with neither coaches nor performers & volunteers receiving any compensation.
In addition there were some semi-professional performances from outside the community who provided the flavor of professional Indian song, dance, and culture to the larger audience. These performers were moderately compensated for their time and service.
Some vendors exhibited and demonstrated the art and costumes of typical Indian clothing, for ladies (sarees), young boys and girls. The art of hand painting (mehndi) was enjoyed by many children.
Several food trucks were available for attendees to enjoy a wide variety of Indian as well as non-Indian cuisine.
