On Friday, July 25th, the vibrant sounds of drums, singing, and celebration echoed outside the International School at Gregory as Freedom School concluded its summer program, hosted by Communities
In Schools. The Freedom School Finale was more than just a closing ceremony, it was a tribute to the voices, stories, and accomplishments of young scholars who spent six weeks immersed in learning, growth, and joy.
Funded in 2024 by a $200,000 grant from The Endowment, the Freedom School program is more than just a summer learning initiative; it’s a movement rooted in growth, opportunity, and learning. Funding from the Endowment allowed CIS to double the capacity of Freedom School to support 200 New Hanover County students this year, providing more young minds with the opportunity to participate in this literacy-based program.
What Is Freedom School?
Freedom School is a six-week summer literacy and cultural enrichment program designed to increase students’ motivation to read, build strong character, and connect families with community resources. Open to rising 3rd through 8th graders in New Hanover County Public Schools, the program is completely free and includes full-day programming from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Scholars receive grade-level books, engaging and high-energy lessons, nutritious breakfast, lunch, and snacks, as well as safe, reliable transportation. This year’s program ran from June 17 to July 26, with all 200 Scholar spots filled, a testament to the program’s growing demand and lasting impact.
Community Makes It Possible
The summer program was made possible through the collaboration of dedicated community partners. New Hanover County Schools provided space, meals, and logistical support. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office brought slushies to help Scholars stay cool during the Finale, and NourishNC offered fresh, healthy food through their Mobile Market, allowing families to bring home nutritious groceries. These partnerships reflect the heart of Freedom School: a shared commitment to learning and to unlocking the limitless potential in every child.
As the cheers echoed and the curtain closed on another summer, one truth stood out—Freedom School is shaping futures, one book, one voice, and one child at a time.
