In June 2025, The Endowment awarded a $5,000 Community Grant to the Autism Society of North Carolina (ASNC) to revamp the adult recreation space and create a dedicated teen area in Wilmington, strengthening communication skills, peer networks, and overall well-being for autistic individuals in our community. For decades, ASNC has provided camps, afterschool programs, respite services, adult programs, and social groups that help autistic people build confidence, develop social and communication skills, and maintain their well-being.
For decades, ASNC has supported people on the autism spectrum and their families through programs such as camps, afterschool activities, respite services, adult programs, and social groups—helping participants build confidence, develop social and communication skills, and maintain their overall well-being.
In New Hanover County, the Social Recreation program provides an inclusive environment where teens and young adults can practice independence and prepare for the future. Trained staff understand the unique strengths and goals of each participant, helping them build friendships, explore new activities, and make steady progress toward greater self-reliance. For caregivers, it provides much-needed respite and the reassurance that their loved one is supported in a safe, caring environment.
“Being able to provide a safe, engaging, and comfortable place where individuals on the spectrum can learn, grow, and thrive is critical to our mission,” says ASNC Chief Development Officer Kristy White. “Grants like that provided by The Endowment make all the difference for the autistic teens and young adults in our Social Recreation program. It means they will have the opportunity to make friends, be part of an inclusive community, grow in confidence, and begin living their best adult lives. We are so grateful.”
