Aretta Williams’ path to nursing was years in the making. After earning degrees in anthropology and criminal justice and building a career in corrections and social services, the call to nursing never left her. In January 2024, she enrolled in Cape Fear Community College’s nursing program as a single mother of two, commuting 45 minutes to campus while balancing classes, clinicals, and parenting.
With the support of her family, CFCC, and The Endowment—through scholarships, and housing assistance—Aretta was able to stay focused and persist through challenges. She graduated in December 2024 with an Associate Degree in Nursing and now works for Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, another grantee of The Endowment. We love these full-circle moments, which reflect the real impact that’s possible when partners work together to make New Hanover County a place where all can thrive.
