Kids at CAM: Juneteenth Commemoration
Saturday, June 28 | 10 AM – 12 PM
Join us on Saturday, June 28, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM for Kids@CAM: Juneteenth Commemoration.

Commemorate Juneteenth with a special edition of Kids@CAM, a family-friendly morning of creativity, expression, and connection. Enjoy hands-on art activities for all ages, parents included, facilitated by museum educators. At 11:30 AM, take part in a guided, family-friendly tour of the exhibitions. Participate in the activities, the tour, or both!

This month’s program invites families to reflect on the question: “What does Freedom feel like?” through artistic exploration and storytelling. Poet and teaching artist Mahlaynee Cooper (aka Carrie Assata) will join us to share her work. Based in Brooklyn, Cooper is the founder of Speak Ya Peace NC and uses poetry, music, and education to empower and inspire. Her presence will bring an engaging layer of spoken word and dialogue to the day’s activities.

Event Highlights:
Freedom Workshop: MahLaynee will guide families in defining freedom through a short workshop that includes writing prompts and group reflection based on lived experiences
Quilting History: Participants will decorate 6×6 quilt squares responding to the question “What does Freedom feel like?” The pieces will be assembled into a collective quilt throughout the event
Collaging Identity: Create a personal identity collage inspired by artists Deborah Roberts and Clotilde Jimenez
Textile Design Station: Design your own textile pattern inspired by bold visual works from Thandiwe Muriu, Mickalene Thomas, Jeffrey Gibson, and Ayana V. Jackson.
Members: $5 per adult/child
Not-Yet Members: $10 per adult/child
