For more than 40 years, Opera House Theatre Company has helped shape Wilmington’s arts community by creating opportunities for local artists to learn, grow, and share their creativity on stage. In 2025, a $4,528 Community Grant from The Endowment supported the company’s ongoing commitment to developing the next generation of performers.
Through the launch of its Next Generation: Apprentice Theatre Program, Opera House Theatre Company opened the door to professional theatre for young artists ages 14–24. The program gave participants the opportunity to learn directly within a mainstage production of Bye Bye Birdie, working alongside experienced mentors and teaching artists.
Grant funding from The Endowment supported stipends for mentors, teaching artists, and apprentices, helping ensure structured, hands-on training throughout the production process. Apprentices received guidance in both performance and behind-the-scenes work, gaining experience in a real professional theatre environment.
For many participants, Bye Bye Birdie marked their first time contributing to a fully staged production in front of a live audience. Throughout rehearsals, apprentices built confidence, strengthened their skills, and gained a deeper understanding of what it takes to bring a production to life.
By expanding access to immersive arts education, Opera House Theatre Company is helping cultivate the next generation of performers, creators, and arts advocates who will continue strengthening Wilmington’s cultural landscape for years to come
