2023 – $3,226,419: This grant supports CIS to continue Freedom School – a summer literacy program – the next three years, helps CIS expand into six additional school sites, and supports the effort to bring the Full-Service Community Schools (FSCS) model to New Hanover County.
2024 – $200,000: Funding will support the expansion of the Freedom School program to serve 100 additional students. This 6-week, literacy-based summer program increases reading skills and promotes social justice through culturally relevant, engaging activities and age-appropriate books.
2025 – $900,000: Fund three-year pilot initiative aimed at supporting New Hanover County educators in ten schools with little to no parental engagement, effectively addressing the gap created by the absence of a PTO presence.
