Finding Healing and Community Through Sailing

A unique nonprofit is helping veterans and first responders navigate the challenges that can come with physical, mental, and emotional trauma.

Founded in 2018 by veteran Josh Johnson, Freedom Sailing was built around a simple but powerful belief: Together we are strong. What began as an opportunity for veterans and first responders to experience sailing has grown into a supportive community where people help one another through life’s transitions, challenges, and hardships.

Operating aboard Sail Shocked, a 24-foot Corsair Trimaran, Freedom Sailing offers free therapeutic sailing experiences that promote camaraderie, teamwork, confidence, and healing. For many participants, time on the water provides not only a sense of peace, but also meaningful connections with others who understand their experiences.

A 2026 Community Grant of $14,600 will help Freedom Sailing continue offering these therapeutic sailing experiences at no cost to participants. The funding will also support an accessible boat slip and important safety equipment, making it easier to get out on the water and allowing the organization to serve more veterans and first responders.

By combining the therapeutic power of sailing with the strength of community, Freedom Sailing is helping participants chart a course toward healing—together.
